Lifetime reading list

A few weeks ago, we were watching Jeopardy and in the segment where Alex asks each contestant about some fun factoid, one of them said that she had read several thousand books in the last 20 years, and she had kept a list of them. (I don't remember how many she said, I think maybe it was 5000.) Whatever the number, my first thought was, "I've read more than that."

I am a voracious reader. I read at least 2 or 3 books a week, more when I'm on vacation or traveling by plane and have extra time to kill. I spent most of last week on a business trip and since I had several long plane rides, I read three books in 4 days.

Over the last few years I seem to make and break the same New Year's resolutions every year (lose weight and exercise more)--yawn. This year I thought, I'm going to start keeping track of every book I read, and I'm going to try to recreate my lifetime reading list. After all, I have many of them upstairs in the bookcase. And stacked on the floor, on the tables, in the bonus room . . .

So, I'm going to work on my list, and I'm going to post some comments on books as I read them this year. I hope that in addition to collecting my thoughts, this process will encourage me to read more broadly. Left to my own devices, my choices can get a little stale, and heavy on the murder and mayhem.
